Mary Evanson Bleckwehl has a Masters Degree in Educational Management from Lesley University in Cambridge, Massachusetts and a B.S. in Elementary Education from Wartburg College in Waverly, Iowa. She has taught in elementary schools in Iowa and Minnesota and has held administrative positions in higher education in Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Iowa and Minnesota.
As a child growing up on a dairy farm in northeast Iowa, Mary loved school but had nightmares about not getting up in time to make the bus. She did make it to school every day and has created Henry, an imaginative youngster who-in Mary's first book, is in a predicament every morning as his family just can't seem to get him to school on time. And with the release of her second book, Henry has a new problem! He is hungry so he eats and wonders why he doesn't feel big and strong after eating all that junk food. Using years of teaching experiences and stories from children, Mary has created touching tales that will resonate with every child from 3 to 93.
Together with her husband, Mary has raised a daughter and two sons and lives in Northfield, Minnesota. She still spends plenty of time in schools as an author as well as a substitute teacher. Mary attempts to be on time and eat healthy...but may be related to Henry a bit in those departments!
A message from the author:
My first grade teacher, Miss Cook, taught me how to read and what a gift it was! I have loved reading and books of all kinds my entire life. I remember begging for fifty cents from my mother so I could order a book from the Arrow Book Club when my teacher passed out the order forms. I still have some of them! And I remember my sister taking me to the public library and getting me my first library card...
So it is with this great "book lover" excitement that I bring you my newest release: Henry! you're hungry AGAIN?As a teacher and mother, I have learned so much from children and this is my gift back to all of them-young and old. The character expressions that illustrator, Brian Barber, has brought to this work are indeed priceless. You will love them.
I hope you will not only buy both Henry!books for yourself and your own children and grandchildren but also for a child who is less fortunate and could use a book to giggle at and read over and over again. I donate books and a portion of my sales to such causes as my legacy is promoting literacy through laughter.
