When I taught first grade, I gave my students 15-20 minutes of DEAR time every day. DEAR stood for Drop Everything and Read. I’ve heard this time when students sit and read called many things: SSR (Sustained Silent Reading), DIRT (Daily Independent Reading Time), SQUIRT (Sustained Quiet Independent Reading Time)-really?! or just plain independent reading. I still love DEAR the best so I had to smile when I heard that Capstone Publishing, one of the most respected children’s publishers for the school market and beyond-and located right here in Minnesota-has launched a literacy campaign called Reading is for Everyone. Part of their efforts include participation in a DEAR day on Friday, February 1 from 10-11:00 am, where all Capstone employees drop everything and read. If you are a teacher, parent, daycare provider, grandparent, or anyone else who would like to have the kids in your life participate on Feb. 1, take a photo and post it on social media using hashtags #ReadingIsForEveryone and #CapstoneForAllKids. Capstone will select random winners to win literary swag.

Happy Reading!
